<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A little bit of backstory: I'd been an intern at Universal TV, and was working as an assistant on a show on the Universal Lot, so I knew a few executives who were willing to read my material. This script impressed them enough to recommend me to the QL producers. The QL folks were reluctant to read a QL script for the usual legal reasons, so I hurriedly finished a draft of a Northern Exposure spec I was working on at the time, and the combination of those two scripts got me a pitch meeting at QL.

Spec scripts walk that fine line between fanfic and producible episode. They need to feel filmable, but in my opinion they need a hook that goes a step past what an average episode would do. I had a note to myself stuck to my working notebook at the time, with a quote from JD Salinger: "Write the book you would want to read next." And under, I'd added "Write the episode you would want to see."

I still want to see "Lost Weekend."

(more about my QL pitch meeting after the jump.)
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
I went into my pitch meeting at QL with 5 ideas that were ready to go -- like, I could have written the beat sheet before I even went to the meeting! -- 5 that were less fully formed, and 5 that were mere notions. The first few ideas I pitched were similar to things they were already working on, which was good for the ego but doesn't close the deal. Fortunately they kept saying "what else you got?" until we hit upon my "Sam Leaps into Dog Day Afternoon" idea, which they went for despite the fact that the show bible specifically said that Sam would never rob a bank. But we had an emotional reason why Sam would go along with the bank robbery, and that's what made it work. That script became the episode "Promised Land," my first script sale.

I found an interview with the QL fanzine where we talk about that first meeting and first sale, you can read it here.

I just realised that the top post for more than a year has been the #1word post from when Len Wein had his bypass surgery. More than a year ago. Rather than leave you all in suspense, let me assure you that Len recently celebrated his birthday, and published his latest run of Swamp Thing issues. Unstoppable! He alive dammit!
I just came from visiting with Len Wein at the hospital. If you don't know who Len Wein is, I can wait while you Google it. He's most famous as the creator of Wolverine and Swamp Thing, but there's hardly a comic book character this man hasn't had a hand in in some way, as writer or editor -- including recent contributions to The Simpsons and Doctor Who.

But more importantly, Len is one of the sweetest, funniest, truly good people you will ever have the pleasure to come across. He and his wife Christine are a nexus for other smart, funny, geeky people. I have been lucky enough to call them both friends for something close to 20 years now.

And because he's a person who loves people, who thrives on company and connection, he would like to be carried into that surgery on waves of positive energy. So please, send up your prayers, your white light, your Yops of any kind -- Len can use it all.
And because I couldn't be there in person to shower him with praise and chocolates, I want to take a moment here to honor him. He's been a part of my life for 30 years, even when he didn't know it.

I've discussed before how David's columns in Starlog and his "Making of" books, particularly "The Making of the Trouble with Tribbles," taught me everything I knew about the realities of TV production before I got behind the curtain myself. I learned about script formatting and timing and production rewrites long before I ever set foot in a writer's room or a production meeting -- thanks to David. I didn't go to Film School, I learned on the job, and he gave me a head start.

Then, in 1993, when I was a very junior writer -- I'd sold 2 scripts and was still working full time as a script coordinator -- I sat on a panel at WorldCon with David Gerrold. It was my first panel on the pro side of the podium. He mentioned that he was teaching Screenwriting at Pepperdine, and I tracked him down after the panel and asked if I could take the course. With his permission, I was able to enroll as an auditor. I made arrangements with my boss on Highlander to leave a little early on class nights to make the commute out to Pepperdine. The same David Gerrold whose work I'd been following for years was now my teacher in a class of only 20 or students. It was like having tickets to see Springsteen play the pub on the corner. Every Tuesday.

When David asked us to introduce ourselves in class and say why were there, I told the story of how he'd already been my teacher for years, through his writings. I remember him telling the class, "See, that's why she'll do well; she acknowledges her debts."

Which is what I'm doing again today. For the record.GHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10291497113580475203noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6199523239435234790.post-31658197854188460352013-08-09T12:55:00.003-07:002014-01-29T21:37:24.135-08:00"Truth" and Gender

Primeval: New World’s mid-season gamechanger, “Truth,” airs
on Syfy in the US this week. In light of
the major revelations the episode contains, one of my favorite things about the
episode tends to get lost in the shuiffle:
its kick-ass women.

This is a show that was never in danger of failing the
Bechdel Test* – the parent series had strong, smart women; the Executive
Producers on the show are 50% female, as were the writing staff; the development
executives at studio and Network, 100%.
Which is not to say that a gender breakdown of the creative team is any
guarantee; I’ve seen amazing female characters created and
developed by men, and I’m sure we could name sexist, reactionary storylines
guided by women.

But beyond the minimum bar of Bechdel, one of the things I’m
most proud of about the version of Primeval: New World we made is the number of
times the female characters were put under threat of sexual violence:
zero. Look, I understand that violence
against women is real and that ripped-from-the-headlines shows, cop shops and
legal shows and medical shows, all have to address it. But sometimes it feels like the “fate worse
than death” card is being constantly played against female protagonists – and rarely
against males.

Primeval: New World is 50% women on-screen, as well. No single character is asked to embody all of womanhood.

In “Truth,” the women come together to save the day. I absolutely adore the matter-of-fact way
director Amanda Tapping staged the scene between Dylan, Toby and Ange in the
Tank. These are pros facing a crisis;
supporting each other and kicking each other’s asses into line. They arm up,
they gird their loins, they do what needs to be done, just like a thousand
sequences you’ve seen before – except for the gender. The closest thing to a “damsel in distress” in
this episode is Mac.

This is also the episode that walks a fine line with Ange -- her storyline here does hinge on her relationship with Evan, and it was important to us all that she not be diminished by that reality. One of my favourite lines in the entire season is her last line in this episode: "I'm not angry. And I'm not staying." Because even as she's recognizing that this situation has become untenable for her, she's also acknowledging that it's no one's fault; relationships can become toxic even with the best of intentions on all sides. Two of the key songs on my playlist for writing Ange's arc were "Heaven Help My Heart" from Chess and "Fine Fine Line" from Avenue Q. Give them a listen and you'll see why.

*For those not familiar with it, this is a litmus test for
movies (and now TV) that poses the following questions: 1) Are there at least two named female characters, who 2) talk to each other, 3) about something other
than men. This isn’t a test of quality,
but it does make for an interesting metric.

GHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10291497113580475203noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6199523239435234790.post-91984637085772577722013-07-20T10:25:00.001-07:002013-07-20T11:07:08.643-07:00Weaving the TapestryHad dinner last night with a group of friends from a show I worked on a few years ago. Being on a show is like Summer Camp, or like University, in that there are lots of circumstantial friendships -- you like each other, you're in the trenches together, you chat and you share meals, but then you don't see each other again until the next show. But when you're lucky, there are a few people you stay friends with, and see on your own time. If you're very lucky, someone in the group is an organized producer-type who makes the gatherings happen.

In discussing the challenges of writing serialized shows with a couple other writers/directors/showrunners around the table, we were talking about the changed expectations that have come about in the last decade or so. We're all old enough to have begun our careers in a more episodic time, when the process was suited to the content: The writers would move one episode at a time along a conveyor belt, from concept to index cards ("beats") on the board to outline to first draft, then hand it off to production and turn their attention to the next script in the sequence. This works great for episodes with standalone A-stories and minor internal histories to weave in along the road from ep 1 to ep 22 (because yes, 90% of the shows I have worked on had 22-episode seasons, not the now-standard 13).

But these days, the 13 episodes tend to tell not 13 stories (or 12 with big 2-part finale), but one story, broken across 13 hours. Instead of climax and revolution at the end of a given episode, false resolution of a single issue comes midway in the hour, followed by the set up of a new escalating problem, and episodes end on the kind of cliffhanger that used to be an Act Break.

I don't think the underlying stories are that different, in terms of how the characters are tested and put through their paces. But the structure is different. The 25 or 30 index cards that would once have been the skeleton of, say, episode 5, are spread more thinly across the canvas of the season, with those beats stretching from episode 3 to episode 7, with maybe a foreshadowing card back in episode 2. Meanwhile the cards from other stories, that in the old system might have been sequestered as episodes 6 and 8, are interspersed and overlapping and co-mingling. It starts to look less like a grid of neat lines of cards, and more like a word cloud or like this image of Verified Twitter Connections:

Which all seems completely reasonable, if you have the luxury of breaking all 13 stories on 13 whiteboards, and then swirling the index cards around like marbleizing a batter. But you don't. You only have a few weeks of writing before filming begins. You know the overall arc of your season-long story, but you only get to fill in the detailed beats of the first episodes before cameras start rolling. That means that you're filming what would have been Act One of the old-school episode 5, which is now scattered throughout episode 3, without having written Act Three. By the time you're wrapping up that story a few weeks later, you're already filming the beginning scenes of what would have once been a stand-alone season finale.

As one of the dinner companions said, it's like weaving a tapestry from the bottom up, without any reference art. You're making feet -- hopefully finely crafted feet -- without having mapped out the rest of the image. You know, or think you know, what the faces are supposed to look like, but you don't have a Weaver's Draft to keep all the threads on track. And that doesn't even take into account the midstream course-corrections -- whether organic to the story, or arising from external forces -- that mean somebody's knees are going to take a weird-ass bend to get them where they need to be.

This is when experience gets tested. Because when you have to make your best guesses on incomplete information, it helps to have been through it before.

This is also where a lot of TV veterans quit to go write novels, where you can have the unbelievable luxury of writing the last chapter before publishing the first.

The SANCTUARY KEEPSAKE CAMPAIGN to benefit the Sanctuary 4 Kids charity continues with new items, including a few little items from Primeval:New World, the new series for the SPACE Channel that has been home this year to a few Sanctuary alumni -- Martin Wood and I are Executive Producing, Amanda Tapping and Andy Mikita each directed multiple episodes, Robert Lawrenson made a guest appearance, and many of the behind-the-scenes crew joined us as well.
What is the Sanctuary Keepsake Campaign? This amethyst-coloured "rubber glass" was created by the FX department for episode #316, "Awakening," to be used in the sequence where the Vampire Queen Afina breaks from her crystal tomb. Although the final on-screen tomb was a CGI creation, the purple rubber glass was crumbled and used on set as shattered pieces on the floor.

Each sculptural piece of "amethyst" retained from the discarded rubber glass is completely unique. These familiar red and gold brocade curtains hung in Helen Magnus' office for the run of the series. For the post-apocalyptic episode "Pavor Nocturnus" in Season 2, the curtains were replaced with these "stunt doubles" that were shredded and distressed for the scene in the destroyed Sanctuary. This screen-used material has been professionally tailored into approximately 12-inch squares, each one unique. Ideal as crying towels for mourning the loss of a beloved series! Many of these are distinguished by unique rips and camera-friendly damage; others are intact and might be pressed into service as dinner napkins. Please note in your email if you prefer an intact or a distressed swatch, and I will do my best to accomodate your request. Each one will come with a Certificate of Authenticity. The SANCTUARY KEEPSAKE CAMPAIGN is going strong and even growing with new donations! I'm overwhelmed by all the generosity -- from fans donating extra and offering their thank-you gifts to other fans in need, to colleagues providing additional items for the drive, it's been an awesome 24 hours. Cinemaspy reported on us here and donations are over $1500 so far!

What is the Sanctuary Keepsake Campiagn? In short, it's a chance to obtain small items from the set of Sanctuary, as thank-you gifts in return for donating to the Sanctuary 4 Kids charity.
In addition, I've obtained a box of promotional items that were created for the original Sanctuary webseries back in 2007. One of these Sanctuary logo memo pads will now be included with every pen or pencil from Magnus' desk. Also, additional promo items (such as promo postcards and Helen Magnus' lenticular business card) will be included with all Thank-You items while supplies last.

So let's get together and help out some people in need around the world! She wished for something from the show to be made available at a more accessible price --"even just a pencil from Magnus' desk." Well folks, imagine my delight -- I HAVE those pens and pencils from Magnus' desk and I want you guys to have them.

Imagine my surprise and delight at discovering that some of the fans involved are Highlander: The Series fans as well -- and that the site's name is in fact in homage to a Highlander fan group that called itself "Clan Denial." It really is a small world -- and it's no small thrill to me when the people who've been watching my work from the start are interested in the next thing I'm doing.
GHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10291497113580475203noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6199523239435234790.post-44570846675676011682011-09-17T10:56:00.000-07:002011-09-17T10:56:15.648-07:00Lightning In A BottleIn the course of my work, I'm sometimes able to attend advance screenings of unreleased films, or view screening copies of TV pilots before they are. It's a great luxury to see some of the new pilots over the summer, because it alleviates some of the pressure in the fall to View All The Shows -- wth luck, you already know which ones you don't like and don't need to TiVo.

(And even after years in this business, I still get a little thrill from the validation that comes with any "insider" invitation.)

I recently sat down to view a selection of pilots for shows that are either not picked up, or not picked up until midseason. 2 of them Canadian-made, so I was interested in checking out the look and feel in the likelihood that I run in to cast and crew around town -- it's always nice to be familiar with people's recent work. During production, of course, there's very little time to keep up with current releases, much less advance releases, so it's nice over hiatus to catch up on favorite shows, friends' shows, and upcoming trends.

The thing that struck me in viewing a selection of this year's crop was how cinematic 3 out of the 4 selections were. Not just in the camerawork and acting style, but in the premises -- I kept seeing stories that seemed perfect fodder for a gripping 2-hour feature, but was hard-pressed to imagine how they were planning to continue for 13 or 22 weeks, much less 5 years

Of course *every* year's crop of pilots serve as a stark reminder of how hard it is to make good television, and how easy a few missteps can make what must have seemed like a good idea at the time into an unwatchable mess. No one sets out to make lame or cheesy shows, and people work just as hard -- and are likely just as excited about -- the losers as the winners

What makes the difference? What's the ligtning in a bottle that makes one show grab you from the first week and make you eager to shout "More show! More show!" ? I'm convinced that one key element is casting -- the wrong leads will tank a clever idea, and the right leads will put butts in seats. But that's only one of so many elements. Messing up even one can drag all the rest down.

Can this things be solved by analysis? Or is this a case where you need to get zen and do the best you can, and then see where the cards land?

In case you haven't noticed, I'm not very good at just watching TV with my feet up. Even when it's not supposed o be work, it turns into grist for the mill.

You may have heard of it. Me, I'm too verbose to be an early adopter of anything requiring concision. 140 characters? Is that even enough room for a haiku? I've got ThingsTo Say, people!

But if you want to get better at stuff, you've gotta do things that aren't a natural fit. People use a phrase around here, "in his wheelhouse," meaning that a task plays to a person's known strengths, and thus they are the perfect choice, sure to succeed.

To a point. On Season 3 of Sanctuary, I was fortunate to write a couple of episodes that were right down my alley, containing the sort of stories that I'm drawn to and known for writing. In fact the second of my two Season 3 episodes, "Awakening," is one that I actively pursued being assigned to because I was so fond of its premise.

In the course of writing Season 4, through the vagaries of scheduling and the needs of the ongoing story, the two scripts I wrote were well outside my usual specialty -- each in a different way. For 403, "Untouchable," in particular, I had to tap into a style and structure that did not come naturally to me. (More about the details of that after it airs. Spoilers, Sweetie!) And you know what? I am more proud of those two scripts than of anything I've done in a long time. I had to really wake up and dig down to get 'em done, and the results are something I am very proud of.

So, lesson re-learned: Don't fall back on old tricks when you can embrace new challenges.

And so, finally, Twitter. With ComiCon looming large in my sights, shiny new Smartphone in hand, I figured I'd jump in the deep end. I quickly found myself tweeting from any place I was standing still -- and cursing when I couldn't get a wireless connection from inside the press room while I waited for the Sanctuary Cast to make their rounds. No signal! Unthinkable!

Yesterday I participated in an event organized by some of our Sanctuary publicity gurus, in honor of the release of our Season 3 DVD sets. A number of cast and crew with Twitter Handles were recruited to play #SanctuaryTwitterTag for the day, passing a virtual baton around cyberspace by tagging one another with questions. Of course it didn't go to plan -- which I soon realized was all for the best. It would have been less fum and less memorable if it had all gone off without a hitch! (This is another of those important life lessons, I assure you.)

At the end of the day, I saw tweets from fans that resonated with me, saying that they had found and were now following one another thanks to participating in the event. I was reminded of the times when I was in frequent attendance at Highlander Conventions, realizing that while the panels with cast and crew are the initial reason for coming, after the first time the fans are gathering to see one another as much as to see us. That they could have (and sometimes do have) awesome conventions without us showing up at all. Their shared love is the glue to their community, online or off. We are mere facilitators.

And I figured out the secret to keeping it short on Twitter, too. It's a conversation, not a lecture. Characters on TV aren't supposed to make speeches longer than five lines, why would I?

Except over here, of course. Still got Things To Say.
(I'm pretty sure it was a Forever Knight event.) I can't comment on her post without joining LJ, so I'm hoping she has a Google alert on her own name that will lead her to this post. I'm I'm glad to know that my link is helping people find and enjoy the new Highlander minisode, and always enjoy the ongoing reunion of acquaintanceship that is enabled by virtual space. Earlier today I exchanged Facebook messages with a writer of Star Wars RPG's, whom I'd met at conventions years ago and remember fondly. (Although by "today" I guess I technically mean "yesterday" -- as always when on deadline, I reverse my nights and days, writing long past midnight and sleeping past noon.)GHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10291497113580475203noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6199523239435234790.post-891810744517950042009-02-09T11:50:00.000-08:002009-02-09T15:02:25.491-08:00AFKGood heavens, where have I been for over two months?! Well, FaceBook, of course, but besides that? One thing that happened is that my primary computer stopped working, gradually and infuriatingly, making signing on slow torture until I finally gave up and switched to my laptop. Which was then hit with the Vundo virus, incapacitating me and reducing me to logging on via an ancient laptop, which gave me a new relationship with the Internet for the last month or so: "Please oh please just let me check my email and send these files, and then I promise I'll turn you off and let you reboot." *sigh* Unable to surf without crashing, I was reduced to playing Spider Solitaire when I needed to procrastinate! (Don't let anyone tell you that procrastinating isn't a necessary part of the writing process! Whatever gets those folds of your brain properly aligned to start the words flowing, I say go for it.)

The primary computer is now back to life so I'm back to being able to surf freely during work-break intervals. Which brings us to the more proximate cause of my recent disappearance, a well-known syndrome known as On A Show.

Talk to any peer group of working writers, at any stage of their career, and they are familiar with the syndrome: one of them gets a staff job, and promptly vanishes off the face of the earth. The first time it happens, you may think that the lucky staff writer is snubbing you, but then it's your turn to be in the same situation, and you realize it's not at all intentional. And then your hiatus rolls around and it's your turn to call everyone you used to hang out with, and beg their forgiveness for going AWOL. And they forgive you, because they did the same thing.

Being On A Show can be all-consuming. Even if it's not a situation where you're in the office till 9 every night and every weekend (and many situations ARE like that), you're usually taking dailies home to watch over dinner, or researching your next story, or assessing every situation through the eyes of your characters. Even when you're 'off the clock,' you're BORING, because everything on your mind is the troubles and triumphs of getting that week's episode in the can. You start to think that the story of how you had to redo the script three times to accomodate the limited availability of a guest star is actually entertaining! So it's best, really, that you confine your social life to your current colleagues and one or two long-time friends who've followed the whole saga like it's their favorite soap opera. (Best if these confidantes are in other lines of work entirely.)

A few years ago I worked on a show that shot in Hawaii, and went on location for 5 weeks, a time of such intensity that it felt like a year's worth of absence. Another time, I travelled with MythQuest to Canada for 6 months at a time. These physical absences were clear cut, and easier to explain, But sometimes, without leaving town, you have to mentally "Go To Canada" with your show, and hope that your friends understand.

I've just finished doing a major piece of writing/rewriting on something I can't publically name at the moment. It's something I very much enjoyed doing, a return to characters I've worked with before and am therefore quite fond of. It's been a brief but intense period of metaphorical Going To Canada-- and returning from it is like returning from months on location. I have to restock the fridge and reconnect with my life. Except I actually have another project with an approaching deadline (not complaining!), so...

As we progress in our careers, my friends and I have sought to create a balance, where we can be working on a project without having to go into the On A Show zone. I do believe it's possible, but I also accept that there will always be weeks when the only thing to do is just give in to it, to be transported out of my actual life and into the fictional world that exists only in the bubble around my monitor.GHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10291497113580475203noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6199523239435234790.post-14841696903413686052008-11-24T19:33:00.000-08:002008-11-24T19:40:21.108-08:00Attention Bob Chapin Fans!

My pal Bob Chapin has a great turn as "Elliot" in Episodes 5 and 6 of the webseries Faux Baby, availbale on strike.tv, youtube and hulu. Some of the program participants I'm always interested to hear from include Michael Engelberg, D.C. I'm also planning to make the effort to try some new things, hear some new voices -- I'm particularly looking forward to the rich track of panels by actual scientists and futurists.

On Saturday, I'll be talking as well as listening -- I'll be participating in 3 panels, on Writing for TV, the interaction between TV Fans and Writers/Producers, and something fun entitled "What I Do When I Should Be Writing."
